Some flight tests in the Boeing 777-9 certification programme could extend into 2027 due to additional work on the GE9X engine. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said at the Morgan Stanley Laguna Conference that part of the testing programme could carry over into next year.
GE Aerospace needs to conduct more testing than initially planned to certify a durability solution for the GE9X engine’s “mid-seal” component. Once the engine manufacturer completes this work, Boeing is expected to seek the necessary FAA approval to begin ETOPS testing.
The additional work has reportedly led to some adjustments to the 777X production and delivery schedule. However, Boeing continues to target the first customer delivery of the 777-9 in 2027. The 777-9, which made its first flight in January 2020, has faced several technical and certification delays since the programme began.
